Exploring the farm

A guided walk on the farm is compulsory at Juv. We take you 1000 years back in time and walk you through the ages until the farm tenant Mons bought the main farm in 1912 and up until today.

The stories about the farmhouses, the villages nearby, and the lives of the people that lived there, allows you to get to know Juv from the inside, and become acquainted with the people that live there. Exploring the farm in this way gives added value to you stay at Juv.

Outdoor hot tub – Utsiktsbadet

Enjoy the moment!

Utsiktsbadet at Juv is an outdoor hot tub with a view. It is located a short distance away from the other buildings to provide a 180 degrees free and spacious view of the landscape reflected in the fjord, at sunrise and sunset in the summertime, and in the darker months of the year you can take a moonlight bath under the starry sky.

This is modern luxury.

Price 500 NOK 1 – 2 persons, 250 NOK per extra person
Bath towel and cleaning included.

Experience the fjord on board a boat

In the past the most important travelling route was along the fjord. People would sail or row wooden boats until motorboats became more commonplace.

We recommend hiring a motorboat and taking a round trip on your own from Juv to Tistam, continuing to Hopland and driving along the north side (Nordsida) and looking at the old boat houses and the steep landscape, continuing further to Utvik and then back to Juv. If you are lucky, you might see a seal along the way, and it could be nice to try your luck at fishing.

The bearded seal is one of the largest types of seal in the Norwegian Arctic waters.

Rent a 15 feet boat with a 9,9 hp motor
750 NOK including 10 litres of fuel and life vests.
The hosts will instruct you in how to use the boat and the engine. Security is important to us, and cancellations can occur subject to weather conditions.

Season:  May – October

A walk to Juvstøylen

Selet, the old farmhouse at Juvstøylen, is several hundred years old and still contains its original furniture and inventary.

My father Arne Berge was born in Utvik i 1927 and started working as a farm boy (dreng) at Juv at a young age. He was the last «milk maid» to milk and tend to the cows during the summer months – staying at a mountain stable similar to a Scottish sheiling (støyl or seter) until he had to leave to do his military service. That was when this activity ended.

From Hammaren by Juvstøylen 460 meters above the sea level there is an amazing overview of the fjord, the glacier, and the surrounding villages. We highly recommend eating lunch and spending the night outdoor in a hammock between the pine trees. Indre Nordfjord Turlag (the local tracking association) has cleared and marked the hiking paths to all the mountain farms or sheilings in Utvik og Tistam. They have also made hiking maps that allows for more mountain walks with a variety of lengths and duration.

A guided mountain walk including a packed lunch costs 750 NOK per person
Duration: 5 – 7 hours
Subject to the availability of the hosts.

Hammock rental costs 100 NOK per person.

Storytelling by the fireplace in Eldhuset

A taste of culture and storytelling by the fireplace in “eldhuset” (literally translated “the firehouse”; an old-fashioned small log house consisting of a “rough kitchen”).

A very special atmospheric moment in eldhuset which is built at the same time as the mill house (kvernhuset). The glowing flame from the fireplace makes a perfect setting for spending time together and sharing good conversations. The taste of tradition can be sour cream porridge and cured ham, dried herring with potatoes and flat bread, coffee and lefse (a traditional soft Norwegian flatbread) with gombe (a local sweet cheese) or other traditional breads, cakes, and pastries.

Gombe
Gombe is milk that is boiled until it become sweet cheese and is served on lefse at parties and holiday festivities.

Price per person 500 NOK
Duration: Up to 3 hours
Subject to the availability of the hosts.
